We know you haven’t heard from us in a while about the AHTF. As many of you know, the General Fund has been the topic of discussion for the majority of this year’s session, and the environment has not been supportive of new revenue. Because of this we have kept a low profile for the past few weeks and have been watching to see if there was any opportunity to focus on new revenue for the AHTF. To date this has not happened and while we are always optimistic, it is the 26th legislative day and we need to be realistic about our chances for funding in 2015. Given that our bill is still in the House, it won’t get a floor vote and move to the Senate before the end of the 30 day legislative session. While the situation is disappointing, we would like to point out the successes that we had this year.
We began the legislative session with a bang and made great relationships and contacts with legislators in the House Ways and Means General Fund and Financial Services Committees. Legislators told us and Representative Todd that they heard from their constituents about the AHTF. We demonstrated the need for revenue because hardworking Alabamians should be able to pay rent and still be able to put food on the table. We had a tremendous turnout for our legislative day and had our advocates and those of our partners walking the halls telling legislators why they must dedicate revenue for the housing trust fund. And we set the foundation for what will be our ongoing revenue campaign.
We want to thank all of you for your ongoing support and your passion to help secure dedicated revenue for the AHTF. And while it didn’t happen this year, it will happen. Passing bills in the Alabama legislature is a marathon, not a sprint. We ran a good campaign and we will run a great one next year. Let’s keep the momentum going!
In the next few weeks you will hear from us with specific tasks for the summer. Until then, take some deep breaths and know that you are part of a powerful movement for positive change. We thank you and we are proud to serve next to y’all as we strive to secure revenue for the AHTF.
Together we can ensure that every child deserves a safe place to call home.
